"Go play outside!"
Back then, those three words were the ultimate launchpad. Half the time, I had zero plan, but that was the whole point. If the "I’m bored" blues hit, the door was the only cure because that’s where the magic lived.
The neighborhood was our kingdom. We were professional architects of backyard clubhouses, Olympic athletes in made-up sports and world-class bike racers (with playing cards clipped to the spokes to get that perfect engine buzz). We threw rocks, caused a ruckus and turned the local Metropark into our personal uncharted territory.
We didn’t have smartwatches; we had the streetlights. When those orange glows flickered to life, it was the universal signal to haul tail home. But for me, the "end of the day" was just the start of Phase Two. I’d swap the dirt for a sketchbook and dive into my own world—drawing, painting and meticulously curating the perfect vibe with hand-crafted mix tapes, recorded straight from the radio with my sweaty finger on the pause button, ready to capture the latest hits.
