Gray Hare | Testing on Animals

The experiment is live. We are the subjects.

Following the fun release of their previous work, Gray Hare pivots into a stark, visceral exploration of a world gone mad. Testing on Animals is a high-concept project that uses the artist’s namesake as a lens to examine the chaos, isolation and clinical uncertainty of the 2020 pandemic era.

The imagery is haunting and direct: a rabbit trapped within the sterile glass of a laboratory jar. It serves as a chilling metaphor for a nation under a microscope, suggesting that during the height of the global crisis, the line between "citizen" and "test subject" became dangerously thin.

The Concept: A Nation Under the Lens

This album isn't just about a virus; it’s about the psychological and social toll of being observed, controlled, and experimented upon by the powers that be. Gray Hare leans into their animal-themed moniker to highlight the loss of human agency, framing the American public as a collection of lab specimens navigating a labyrinth of mandates and fear.

Sonic Atmosphere

The production embodies the same boom-bap feel while pushing into something more industrial, claustrophobic, and urgent:

  • Mechanical rhythms that mimic the hum of a laboratory.

  • Dissonant synths reflecting the anxiety of 2020 lockdowns.

  • Piercing lyricism that questions authority and deconstructs the "new normal."

"When you look at the cover, you see the rabbit in the jar. But when you listen to the music, you realize the jar is the room you were stuck in for a year. We weren't just living through history; we were being tested to see how much we could take."Gray Hare
